Hardik Pandya Faces Complaint for Alleged Disrespect to Indian Flag

Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya has come under scrutiny after a formal complaint was filed accusing him of showing disrespect to the national flag during India’s triumphant celebrations following their victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

The issue was raised when advocate Wajid Khan submitted a complaint at Shivaji Nagar Police Station in Pune. Police sources have confirmed that the application was received and calls for suitable legal action against Pandya.

The controversy stems from video footage captured during the post-final festivities at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. India had earlier secured a decisive 96-run victory over New Zealand in the final, claiming their third T20 World Cup title and their first on home soil.

Clips widely shared on social media show Pandya with the Indian tricolour draped across his shoulders while he danced and moved energetically on the field amid the team’s joyous scenes. According to the complainant, Pandya was later seen lying on the stage next to his girlfriend, Mahieka Sharma, with the flag still draped over him—an act the petitioner considers disrespectful to the national emblem.

Khan argues that this behaviour violates the provisions of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971, which is designed to protect the honour and dignity of the Indian flag. He pointed out that even though the incident took place in Ahmedabad, the complaint was lodged in Pune because the national flag represents the entire country.

Authorities have acknowledged receipt of the complaint but have not disclosed whether a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered or if any formal investigation has begun.

Reactions on social media remain sharply divided. Many fans defend Pandya, describing the moments as natural, spontaneous outbursts of happiness after a historic achievement for Indian cricket. Others insist that national symbols deserve complete respect in any public setting, irrespective of the celebratory atmosphere.

The complaint arrives soon after India’s commanding run in the tournament, which concluded with the team lifting the trophy in front of an ecstatic home crowd.
