NEW YORK: Spain produced a dominant performance to defeat defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the FIFA World Cup final on Sunday, denying Lionel Messi what is widely expected to have been his final opportunity to lift the World Cup trophy. However, the celebrations were overshadowed by ugly scenes after the final whistle, disappointing the thousands of spectators inside the stadium as well as millions watching on television and digital platforms.
Soon after the referee blew the final whistle, several players from both teams became involved in a heated scuffle on the pitch.
Argentina Player Knocks Down Spanish Opponent
Ironically, many of the players involved in the confrontation had previously played together for Barcelona.
While Spain’s players were celebrating their first World Cup triumph in 16 years, Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes allegedly shoved Spain defender Eric García, triggering a confrontation. Players from both sides rushed in as tempers flared, with pushing and shoving quickly escalating. During the melee, one Argentine player reportedly punched a Spanish player and knocked him to the ground twice.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup witnessed numerous incidents of aggressive fouls, reckless challenges and off-the-ball altercations throughout the tournament. The post-match clash after the final only added to those concerns, leaving many fans feeling that such behaviour had tarnished the image of football on its biggest stage.

As the confrontation intensified, with some players even grabbing opponents by the neck, members of both teams’ coaching staff and the match officials rushed onto the field. They separated the players, restored order and eventually brought the tense situation under control.
