Birthday Boy MS Dhoni Watches Helplessly as India Suffers Worst Defeat in T20I History

“On His 45th Birthday, Dhoni Gestured to a Fan: ‘I’m Getting Old… My Beard Has Turned White… I Can’t Even Walk Properly Anymore.'”

Trent Bridge: India won the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup under MS Dhoni’s captaincy in 2007, and the legendary skipper went on to lead the team to numerous memorable victories. However, on Tuesday, July 7, the birthday boy had little to celebrate as he watched Team India suffer its worst-ever defeat in T20 International history while seated in a special lounge at Trent Bridge.

In front of Dhoni, Shreyas Iyer’s side was crushed by England by 125 runs, marking India’s biggest defeat by margin of runs in T20 Internationals.

Tuesday marked Dhoni’s 45th birthday, and the former India captain had chosen to celebrate the occasion by watching the match at the stadium. Instead, he witnessed one of the darkest days in India’s T20 history.

In other words, even Dhoni’s presence in the stands could not inspire India’s young T20 side to avoid a historic defeat.

‘I’m Old Now… My Beard Has Turned White’

At one stage during the match, Dhoni stood up in the stands as fans urged him to come out of retirement and play for India once again.

With a smile, Dhoni gently stroked his beard and responded through gestures, saying, “I’m old now… my beard has turned white… I can’t even walk properly anymore.”

His light-hearted response drew smiles and applause from the crowd.

Fans Surround Dhoni Outside Trent Bridge

After the match, hundreds of fans, photographers and journalists gathered outside Trent Bridge in Nottingham to catch a glimpse of the former India captain. The crowd became so large that Dhoni found it difficult to reach his car.

With the help of his security personnel and friends, he slowly made his way through the crowd before finally getting into his vehicle.
