Ahmedabad : Canadian left-arm wrist spinner Ansh Patel made a memorable return to his home state of Gujarat during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, claiming three important wickets against South Africa in a Group D match. Born in Vadodara, Patel impressed with dismissals of Aiden Markram, Dewald Brevis and Ryan Rickelton as he showcased his bowling skills at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Patel’s journey is unconventional. After progressing through Baroda’s youth system and representing the state at various age-group levels, a change in eligibility rules by the BCCI pushed him to pursue international cricket with Canada. Holding dual ties to both countries, Patel moved back to Canada in 2024 and quickly earned his place in the national side, making his international debut later that year.
At the World Cup fixture against South Africa, Patel’s left-arm wrist spin proved effective despite Canada ultimately losing the game. He first removed South African captain Markram, who had been in commanding form, caught at long-on by Dillon Heyliger, and then accounted for Rickelton and Brevis in the same over, swinging momentum briefly in Canada’s favour.
South Africa posted a strong total, led by Markram’s half-century and supported by contributions from David Miller and Tristan Stubbs, but Patel’s wickets underlined his potential on a big stage.
For Patel, the match held special significance as it was played in the state where his cricketing foundation was laid. His rise from local cricket in Baroda to representing Canada at a global tournament reflects a unique path forged through adaptability and perseverance.
While Canada faced a challenging fixture in Group D, Patel’s performance offered a glimpse of promise for the team’s spin attack and highlighted the growing impact of players with diverse international backgrounds.
