FIFA WORLD CUP 2026: Beyond A Tournament

New York: As the whole world waits for the commencement of the prestigious FIFA World Cup’s 2026 edition, an example of pure friendship has already been set by Scotland captain Andy Robertson ahead of the play. A numb-eyed Robertson expressed sheer emotion while reacting to a letter written by his friend’s wife.

In FIFA’s sportsmanship event, “Letters that unite”, a heavy emotion drove Robertson when he read Rute Cardoso’s words. The captain shared a deep friendship with the late player Diogo Jota when they both were in the Liverpool team. Diogo Jota and Andy always dreamt of playing in the World Cup someday, and when Robertson finally qualified to contest for the World Cup, Jota had by then already passed away in a tragic car accident in July 2025. Robertson conveyed that when he heard the news of the World Cup qualification, only Jota was revolving in his mind, and he was arrested in deep feelings of the loss of a beloved friend and grief.

The letter written by the widow said, “Diogo often spoke of you. Of the friendship you built, the battles you fought together, the challenges, the laughter, the conversations about football… and about dreams. The World Cup was one of those dreams, a dream that the two of you nurtured, side by side, with the same passion with which you took to the pitch.” Robertson read the letter in front of FIFA staff and said, “I’m playing for both of us.”

Both friends shared an immense brotherhood, and the weight of his loss still resonates with the public and teams. As Scotland advances to play in the World Cup, the sport once again proves that it is beyond winning and losing, but about expressing warmth on the field and paying tribute to a friend whose goal was to score a goal at the World Cup level.
