Who is Justice Yashwant Varma? Fire Incident at Judge’s Bungalow Leads to Cash Recovery

New Delhi: Justice Yashwant Varma, a judge currently serving at the Delhi High Court, is set to be transferred back to his original high court in Allahabad. This decision by the Supreme Court Collegium reportedly follows an “adverse report” concerning the judge, according to the news agency ANI.
The Supreme Court’s panel, headed by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, has recommended Justice Varma’s transfer to the central government for approval. Justice Varma was appointed as a judge at the Delhi High Court in October 2021.
This development comes shortly after a report by The Times of India detailed a fire incident at Justice Varma’s official residence in Delhi. The report claimed that a significant amount of cash was discovered after the fire was extinguished.
According to the ToI report, Justice Varma was not in Delhi when the fire occurred. His family members alerted the fire department and the police. After the fire was put out, responders reportedly found a large quantity of cash inside a room. This discovery led to official documentation of what appeared to be unaccounted money.
Who is Justice Yashwant Varma?
Justice Yashwant Varma was born in Allahabad on January 6, 1969. He pursued his Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree from Hansraj College, which is part of Delhi University. He later obtained his law degree (LLB) from Rewa University in Madhya Pradesh and was admitted to the bar as an advocate on August 8, 1992.
His judicial career began on October 13, 2014, when he was appointed as an additional judge at the Allahabad High Court. He was later confirmed as a permanent judge on February 1, 2016. Subsequently, he was transferred to the Delhi High Court on October 11, 2021.
During his time practicing law at the Allahabad High Court, Justice Varma specialized in various legal fields, including constitutional law, labor and industrial legislation, corporate law, taxation, and related matters. He also served as a special counsel for the Allahabad High Court from 2006 until his elevation to the bench.
Furthermore, Justice Varma held the position of chief standing counsel for the state of Uttar Pradesh from 2012 to August 2013, before being designated as a senior advocate by the court.
