New Delhi: Customs officials at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport foiled a gold smuggling attempt when they seized 997.5 grams of gold from a woman passenger arriving from Myanmar. The gold, valued in lakhs, was discovered during a late-night operation on Friday.
According to customs officials, the woman had landed in Delhi via flight number 8M 620 from Yangon and tried to exit through the Green Channel, which is reserved for passengers declaring no taxable or restricted items. However, her suspicious behavior caught the attention of officers, prompting a detailed search.

During the personal frisking, officials found six gold bars hidden inside her undergarments. The total weight of the seized gold came to nearly one kilogram. The customs department immediately confiscated the gold and registered a case under relevant sections of the Customs Act, 1962.
Officials said that under the Customs Act, undeclared possession or cross-border transport of gold or other valuables is a serious offense. Investigations are now underway to determine whether the woman was part of a larger smuggling network.
Delhi Customs issued an official statement confirming the seizure and reiterated that strict action will continue against such illegal activities. Authorities urged returning travelers to declare precious metals or high-value goods upon arrival, warning that failure to comply could lead to severe legal penalties.
