Congress Set to Take Waqf Bill Fight to Supreme Court

The Congress party announced on Friday that it will soon approach the Supreme Court to contest the constitutionality of the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, following its approval by Parliament. The legislation cleared both houses after intense debate, with the Rajya Sabha giving its assent early Friday following a marathon 13-hour discussion.

In a statement shared on X, Jairam Ramesh, AICC general secretary, declared, “The INC will very soon be challenging in the Supreme Court the constitutionality of the Wakf (Amendment) Bill, 2024.” He emphasized the party’s resolve, adding, “We are confident and will continue to resist all assaults of the Modi Govt on the principles, provisions, and practices that are contained in the Constitution of India.”

The Waqf Bill sparked sharp divisions during its passage. Opposition parties in the Rajya Sabha fiercely criticized it as “anti-Muslim” and “unconstitutional,” while the government defended the legislation as a “historic reform” aimed at benefiting the minority community. The bill secured approval in the Rajya Sabha with 128 votes in favor and 95 against, after passing the Lok Sabha on Thursday with 288 members supporting it and 232 opposing.

Ramesh also highlighted other ongoing legal battles by the Congress, noting that the party’s challenge to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019, is currently under review in the Supreme Court. Similarly, he pointed out that the INC’s objections to the 2019 amendments to the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005, and the 2024 changes to the Conduct of Election Rules are being heard by the apex court. Additionally, the Congress is involved in a case to uphold the integrity of the Places of Worship Act, 1991, which is also before the Supreme Court, Ramesh added.
