New Delhi : A day after Congress MP Rahul Gandhi claimed that a Brazilian model’s photograph appeared 22 times on Haryana’s electoral rolls, India Today found a voter record carrying the same image, this time linked to a woman who died in March 2022. The voter, Guniya, wife of Vinod, had passed away more than two years ago. Her family said they were shocked to discover that her name still appeared on the voter list, and that, too, with the photo of a foreign woman.
We don’t know what has happened,” said Guniya’s mother-in-law, who also shared her death certificate. The family said Guniya had cast her vote before her death, but they were unaware how such a photo misprint occurred. Rahul Gandhi, at a press conference on Wednesday, had alleged large-scale voter fraud in the 2024 Haryana Assembly elections, claiming that a Brazilian model’s photo had been used repeatedly under names like Seema, Sweety, and Saraswati.
He accused the BJP and the Election Commission of colluding to “steal” votes, and said his team had found 25 lakh fake voter entries, around 12% of the state’s electorate. Haryana has two crore voters, and 25 lakh of them are fake, Gandhi said, calling it “systemic manipulation” to turn a Congress victory into defeat. Now, the woman whose image sparked the controversy has reacted with surprise.
I have absolutely nothing to do with politics in India. My photo was purchased from a stock image platform and used without my involvement. It’s not me, I’ve never even been to India,” she said in a video message, adding, “I’m a Brazilian digital influencer and a hairdresser, and I love the Indian people. Larissa revealed that her Instagram was suddenly flooded with messages and comments from Indian users after her photo went viral following Rahul Gandhi’s press briefing.
