Vedanta Chairman Mourns Sudden Loss of Son Agnivesh Agarwal at 49

Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal has announced the tragic passing of his son, Agnivesh Agarwal, who suffered a fatal cardiac arrest at the age of 49 in New York.
Agnivesh was in the process of recuperating from injuries sustained in a skiing accident at Mount Sinai Hospital when the sudden heart attack occurred.
In a deeply emotional statement shared on X, Agarwal described the event as the darkest day of his life. “My beloved son, Agnivesh, left us far too soon. He was just 49 years old, healthy, full of life, and dreams,” he wrote. “Following a skiing accident in the US, he was recovering well in Mount Sinai Hospital, New York. We believed the worst was behind us. But fate had other plans, and a sudden cardiac arrest snatched our son away from us.”
Agarwal reflected on his son’s life, noting his birth on June 3, 1976, in Patna to a middle-class family from Bihar. He highlighted Agnivesh’s personal qualities, calling him a man of strength, compassion, and purpose who was the light of his mother’s life, a protective brother, a loyal friend, and a gentle soul.
Professionally, Agnivesh attended Mayo College in Ajmer, founded Fujeirah Gold, and served as Chairman of Hindustan Zinc. He also held the position of chairperson at Vedanta subsidiary Talwandi Sabo Power Ltd. Despite his successes, he remained simple and deeply human, Agarwal emphasized. “To me, he was not just my son. He was my friend. My pride. My world.”

Concluding his tribute, Agarwal said his son would live on through their work and the lives he influenced, adding that he would strive to carry forward Agnivesh’s legacy despite the profound loss.
Anil Agarwal has two children: his late son Agnivesh and daughter Priya, who serves on the board of Vedanta Ltd. and as chairperson of Hindustan Zinc Ltd.
