UP Man Detained for Alleged Espionage Links to Pakistan via WhatsApp Groups

Varanasi: A man identified as Tufail has been arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) in Varanasi for allegedly spying for Pakistan and engaging in activities deemed anti-national. The arrest follows an investigation that uncovered Tufail’s involvement in WhatsApp groups used to share sensitive information and promote extremist ideologies.
According to a statement from the UP ATS, Tufail was apprehended after authorities received intelligence about his role in exchanging classified information with foreign entities. The ATS revealed that the suspect was part of online groups, including one named ‘Ghazwa-e-Hind,’ where members allegedly circulated messages promoting extremist narratives, such as calls for revenge over the Babri Masjid demolition. These groups reportedly included participants from Pakistan and other countries, raising concerns about coordinated efforts to undermine national security.
The investigation, supported by central intelligence agencies, led to the seizure of Tufail’s mobile phone, which contained evidence of his communications with foreign contacts. The ATS stated that these interactions involved sharing sensitive details that could compromise India’s security. The operation reflects a broader crackdown on espionage activities, with authorities intensifying surveillance following recent incidents, including the Pahalgam terror attack.
Tufail’s arrest underscores the growing challenge of digital platforms being exploited for subversive activities. The UP ATS continues to probe the extent of the network and its connections to foreign intelligence operatives, with further arrests possible as the investigation unfolds.
