‘Together for Global Progress!’ PM Modi Meets Canada’s PM Mark Carney and World Leaders at G7 Summit in Canada

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a series of bilateral meetings with world leaders on the sidelines of the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Canada. During the international gathering he held discussions with leaders from Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, South Africa, Australia, South Korea, Japan and the European Union.

In a post on X PM Modi shared, “Together for global progress! Productive exchanges with G7 leaders on key global challenges and shared aspirations for a better planet.”

This visit marks Modi’s first trip to Canada since tensions arose over the past two years stemming from former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s perceived support for separatist movements against India. Meeting Canada’s new Prime Minister Mark Carney Modi said, “Had an excellent meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney. Congratulated him and the Canadian government for hosting a successful G7 Summit. India and Canada share a commitment to democracy, freedom and the rule of law. PM Carney and I look forward to deepening India-Canada ties with immense potential in trade, energy, space, clean energy, critical minerals and fertilizers.”

Modi also held talks with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz noting on X, “Delighted to meet Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the G7 Summit. India and Germany bound by shared values celebrate 25 years of Strategic Partnership. We explored closer collaboration in IT, manufacturing, semiconductors, sustainability, research and innovation alongside stronger defense and security ties including counter-terrorism and combating terror financing.”

In a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni Modi wrote on X, “India’s friendship with Italy will keep growing bringing great benefits to our people!” He also met French President Emmanuel Macron stating, “Always a pleasure to discuss a wide range of issues with my friend President Emmanuel Macron. India and France will continue working for a better planet.”

After talks with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer Modi shared, “An excellent conversation with Prime Minister Keir Starmer! India-UK ties are strengthening with progress in trade and commerce. We’ll keep adding momentum to this valued friendship.”

Following his meeting with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Modi said, “Congratulated President Claudia Sheinbaum on her historic win as Mexico’s first female president in two centuries. We see strong potential for deeper India-Mexico ties in agriculture, semiconductors, critical minerals, healthcare and people-to-people connections.”

Modi also met Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba noting, “Insightful discussions with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba at the G7 Summit. India and Japan are committed to strengthening bilateral ties across various sectors.” Similarly after meeting South Korean leader Lee Jae-myung he said, “President Lee Jae-myung and I had a productive meeting. India and South Korea aim to collaborate in commerce, investment, technology, green hydrogen and shipbuilding.”

Additionally Modi held discussions with European Council President António Costa, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva reinforcing India’s commitment to global cooperation as reported by various posts on X.
