Delhi-NCR Braces for Heavy Rain as Monsoon Nears

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi, Gurgaon, and Faridabad, forecasting light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds on Monday. Wind speeds are expected to reach 30 to 40 kilometers per hour, with the potential for heavier showers throughout the day.

The IMD predicts that the southwest monsoon will arrive in Delhi and surrounding regions, including Chandigarh, parts of Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir, by June 24. This follows a weekend of intermittent rainfall that has already brought cooler temperatures to the national capital. The monsoon’s progression is expected to cover most parts of Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Kashmir, and sections of Jammu and Punjab within the next two days.

Delhi’s weather is anticipated to remain cloudy with moderate to light rainfall through June 25, according to the IMD. Gusty winds, occasionally reaching speeds of 50 kilometers per hour during evening or nighttime thunderstorms, are also likely. The city’s air quality has improved, with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reporting a “satisfactory” Air Quality Index (AQI) of 98 at 4 p.m. on Sunday.

The IMD has also forecasted heavy to very heavy rainfall across northwest India, including Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and the Konkan and Goa regions, through June 26. Isolated areas in East Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh may experience extremely heavy downpours on June 23 and 24.
