New Delhi: Three Indian nationals have gone missing in Iran, prompting concerns of a possible kidnapping. The Indian Embassy in Tehran updated about the disappearance on Wednesday and said it is actively coordinating with Iranian authorities to locate the individuals and ensure their safety.
In an official statement shared on social media platform X, the Embassy said: “Family members of 3 Indian citizens have informed the Embassy of India that their relatives are missing after travelling to Iran. The Embassy has strongly taken up this matter with the Iranian authorities and requested that the missing Indians should be urgently traced and their safety ensured. We are also keeping the family members updated of the efforts being made by the Embassy.”
While the Embassy did not release specific details about the case, reports suggest that the missing individuals are from Punjab. They have been identified as Hushanpreet Singh from Sangrur, Jaspal Singh from SBS Nagar, and Amritpal Singh from Hoshiarpur. The trio reportedly arrived in Tehran on May 1 and lost contact with their families shortly thereafter.
According to media reports and statements from relatives, the three men may have been victims of a kidnapping scheme. Hushanpreet Singh’s mother alleged that a travel agent misled them, promising work permits for Australia but instead arranging for them to be taken to Iran under the guise of a temporary stopover.
She further claimed that soon after their arrival, the families began receiving ransom demands from unknown individuals. Disturbingly, the families were sent a video showing the three men bound with yellow ropes, with visible injuries on their arms. The kidnappers reportedly threatened to kill the men if the ransom was not paid.
Indian authorities have not officially confirmed the kidnapping claims, but the efforts are ongoing to trace the missing men, and their families continue to appeal for swift action from both Indian and Iranian authorities.
