Tragic End for Young Doctor in Telangana After Rejected Marriage Promise Over Caste

In Siddipet district, Telangana, a 23-year-old house surgeon from a Dalit background died by suicide after a senior colleague withdrew his earlier commitment to marry her, citing caste differences, according to police reports.

The woman, undergoing her internship at the Government Medical College in Siddipet, reportedly became deeply distressed when the senior resident doctor—whom she had met in July of the previous year—refused to proceed with the marriage. Authorities described the situation as one where she felt “cheated” after his initial promise.

On January 3, overwhelmed by the rejection, she self-administered a herbicide in the college hostel and soon lost consciousness. Her roommates quickly transported her to a local hospital in Siddipet. As her condition deteriorated, she was transferred to a state-run facility in Hyderabad, where she succumbed to her injuries in the early hours of January 4 during treatment.

Police registered a case following a complaint lodged by the victim’s sister. The accused senior doctor has been arrested under pertinent provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The deceased came from a modest family in Jogulamba-Gadwal district. Her parents work as daily wage laborers, while her elder sister is employed as a software engineer. Despite financial hardships, she pursued her education at a social welfare school before enrolling in MBBS at the Siddipet Government Medical College in 2020. Described by police as an outstanding student who also excelled in academics, sports, and extracurricular activities, she had shown great promise in her medical career.

The incident underscores the profound emotional toll of unfulfilled commitments intertwined with caste considerations in personal relationships.
