Supreme Court Petition Demands SIT Probe into Murshidabad Violence

A plea has been submitted to the Supreme Court requesting an investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the recent outbreak of violence in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district, which occurred during demonstrations against the Waqf Amendment Act.
The petition, filed by senior advocate Shashank Shekhar Jha, also asks the apex court to oversee the probe to ensure transparency and accountability.
Since Friday, violent clashes erupted across Suti, Dhulian, Samserganj, and Jangipur areas, leaving three people dead and multiple others injured. Incidents of arson, vandalism, and stone-pelting were reported, targeting public and private property. Authorities have so far arrested 210 individuals in connection with the unrest.
In response to the violence, the Calcutta High Court ordered the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to help stabilize the situation and restore law and order in the district.
Jawed Shamim, Additional Director General (Law and Order), reported on Monday that the situation is gradually improving. Shops have begun reopening, and families displaced during the violence are returning home. “So far, 19 families have come back. Both Malda and Murshidabad administrations are coordinating efforts to ensure a safe return for all affected,” he said.
Authorities are also using public announcements to encourage residents to resume normal activities and rebuild their lives.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose stated that he is in continuous contact with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and confirmed that the Central government is keeping a close watch on the developments. Bose assured that central forces, along with state police, have been adequately deployed to provide timely support and assistance on the ground.
