Shubhanshu Shukla undergoing post-mission medical evaluation, says ISRO

On July 15, 2025, Indian astronaut Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla safely returned to Earth after completing the Axiom-04 mission, according to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The astronaut was extracted in stable condition from the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft following its splashdown off the California coast and is now undergoing a structured post-mission medical evaluation and recovery protocol supervised by ISRO and Axiom Space flight surgeons.

As part of India’s participation in the Axiom-04 mission, ISRO deployed a high-level delegation and a Mission Operations Team to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida prior to the mission’s launch. The teams later relocated to the Johnson Space Center in Houston to support docking operations. The ISRO Mission Operations Team worked alongside NASA and Axiom flight controllers, engaging in real-time decision-making, telemetry tracking, crew timeline management, and health monitoring of both the astronaut and scientific payloads. ISRO noted that this hands-on experience provided critical insights into international crewed mission coordination, emergency response protocols, and the complexities of orbital operations.

ISRO emphasized that the collaborative mission marks a significant step toward developing India’s infrastructure for crewed spaceflight operations. The knowledge and expertise gained are expected to enhance preparations for future indigenous programs, including the Gaganyaan mission and the planned Bharatiya Antariksha Station (Indian Space Station).
