New Delhi/Ranchi– Veteran politician and former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren passed away on Monday at the age of 81 after a prolonged illness. The founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and a towering figure in tribal rights advocacy breathed his last at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi, where he had been receiving treatment.
Soren, who served as Chief Minister of Jharkhand on three occasions briefly in 2005, from 2008 to 2009, and again from 2009 to 2010 left an indelible mark on the state’s political landscape. His death comes as a significant loss, marking the end of an era for a leader who spearheaded the movement for Jharkhand’s statehood, achieved in 2000 after decades of struggle. The JMM, co-founded by Soren in 1972 alongside other tribal leaders, became a cornerstone of his legacy.
His son, Hemant Soren, the current Jharkhand Chief Minister, confirmed the news and is expected to guide the family and party through this period of mourning. Details regarding funeral arrangements remain pending, but the event is anticipated to draw widespread attention given Soren’s stature.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his respects, describing Soren as a dedicated grassroots leader committed to uplifting tribal communities and the marginalized. In a tweet from his official account, Modi expressed his sorrow, stating, “Pained by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and admirers. Spoke to Jharkhand CM Shri Hemant Soren Ji and expressed condolences. Om Shanti.” The gesture underscores the national recognition of Soren’s contributions.
Soren’s political career was illustrious, spanning eight terms in the Lok Sabha and two in the Rajya Sabha. Beginning as a school teacher, he leveraged his deep understanding of rural issues to connect with Jharkhand’s tribal population, earning him a revered status. His passing has triggered mourning across political lines, with leaders acknowledging his role in advancing social justice, as reported by Jagran.
The news unfolds against the backdrop of ongoing political developments in Jharkhand, highlighting the significant transition within the Soren family’s leadership.
