October school holidays across India: Closures on Diwali, Chhath, Bhai Dooj, check dates

As the festive season approaches, educational institutions nationwide are preparing for a series of closures tied to Diwali and related celebrations, offering students and educators much-needed respite. While a uniform six-day holiday spans much of the country, regional variations in states like Bihar, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal add extra days to the calendar, accommodating local traditions and administrative needs.

Nationwide, schools will shutter from October 18, marking Dhanteras, through October 23, encompassing Bhai Dooj. This period includes key observances such as Chhoti Diwali, the primary Diwali celebrations, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj, allowing families to partake fully in the rituals of light and renewal.

In Bihar, a poll-sensitive region, the Diwali pause extends further with dedicated holidays preceding Chhath Puja. This adjustment creates a prolonged interlude for students, blending national festivities with the state’s revered harvest festival.

Karnataka has already implemented an early closure from October 8 to 18, enabling teachers to contribute to the state’s ongoing socioeconomic caste survey. Additional holidays are set for October 20, observed as Naraka Chaturdashi, and October 22, designated for Balipadyami and Deepavali, ensuring a seamless transition into the main celebrations.

Rajasthan offers one of the longest breaks, with schools off since October 13 and resuming only on October 25—spanning a full 12 days. This generous window provides ample time for communities to immerse in Diwali’s vibrant customs.

Uttar Pradesh aligns closely with the national framework, closing from October 20 to 23 for Diwali. The preceding Sunday on October 19 effectively stretches the holiday, granting an unofficial extension for rest and festivities.

West Bengal’s schedule mirrors this brevity, with closures from October 20 to 23 covering Kali Puja on October 20, Diwali on October 21, and Bhai Dooj on October 23. The state emphasizes these observances, reflecting its unique cultural tapestry.

Though these outlines provide a broad overview for October 2025 holidays, as reported by Livemint, parents and students should verify specifics with their local schools, as minor adjustments may occur based on institutional policies or unforeseen events.
