Satyapal Malik, the former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, passed away on August 5, 2025, at the age of 79, after a prolonged illness. He died at 1:10 PM at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in New Delhi, where he had been receiving treatment for kidney-related issues, as confirmed by his personal secretary, KS Rana, and reported by news agency ANI. Malik was admitted to the hospital on May 11, 2025, and had been undergoing dialysis due to his deteriorating health.
Malik, a seasoned politician, served as the final Governor of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir from August 2018 to October 2019. His tenure was marked by a significant event in Indian history the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, which revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, leading to its reorganization into two Union Territories. This historic decision occurred exactly six years before his passing.
On June 8, 2025, Malik shared a health update on social media, describing his condition as “serious.” The day prior, he posted on X, noting that he had been hospitalized for over a month due to kidney complications. His health had been a concern for some time, as he faced ongoing treatment and dialysis.
Malik’s political career spanned several decades, during which he held various significant roles. He was a three-time parliamentarian and served as a Union Minister of State. His tenure as Governor extended beyond Jammu and Kashmir, including appointments in Goa, Bihar, Meghalaya, and a brief period with additional charge in Odisha. Known for his outspoken nature, Malik often voiced concerns on public issues, including his criticism of the central government’s handling of certain matters, which drew attention in recent years.
The veteran leader’s death marks the end of a notable chapter in Indian politics. His contributions, particularly during the pivotal period of Article 370’s abrogation, remain a significant part of his legacy.
