Road Accident Victims To Receive Up To Rs 1.5 Lakh Cashless Treatment Under New Nationwide Scheme

New Delhi: In an initiative to enhance emergency healthcare for road accident victims, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has officially rolled out a nationwide cashless treatment scheme, effective from May 5, 2025. Under this program, victims of road accidents involving motor vehicles will be eligible for cashless medical treatment of up to Rs 1.5 lakh at designated hospitals within seven days of the incident.

“Any person being a victim of a road accident arising out of the use of a motor vehicle, occurring on any road, shall be entitled to cashless treatment in accordance with the provisions of this scheme,” the government notification stated.

The scheme ensures equal access to emergency medical services regardless of the victim’s class or category. Treatment will be fully cashless at hospitals enlisted under the scheme. In the case of non-designated hospitals, care will be limited to essential stabilisation as per the scheme’s official guidelines.

The National Health Authority (NHA) has been entrusted with implementing the scheme at the national level. It will coordinate efforts with local police departments, healthcare institutions, and State Health Agencies to ensure smooth operation. Each state and Union Territory will establish a State Road Safety Council to act as the nodal body for local execution of the scheme.

This comprehensive plan builds upon the pilot project launched on March 14, 2024, which tested the feasibility of cashless treatment for accident victims and laid the foundation for this nationwide initiative.
