Lucknow : Chhangur Baba, the alleged Mastermind of a religious conversion racket busted in Uttar Pradesh, presented himself as a senior functionary of an RSS-affiliated body while meeting officials and even used the photo of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the letterhead of the organisation, investigators said. Chhangur Baba, alias Jamaluddin was made the general secretary (Awadh) of an organisation named Bharat Pratikarth Seva Sangh.
Investigators said the name of the organisation was strategically chosen to create a false impression that it was associated with the RSS. Islam even established a bogus centre in Nagpur – the headquarters of the RSS – to make the outfit look credible. Chhangur Baba, a spiritual leader from Balrampur was arrested earlier this month for allegedly orchestrating a large-scale religious conversion racket. He particularly targeted minor girls from economically weaker sections.
Investigating the case, also found that Islam was involved in illegal purchases of village community lands by colluding with local administration officials. The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) has said that he was plotting to set up a terrorist training facility with the help of foreign funding. He is alleged to have received over Rs 500 crore from foreign sources, including Gulf countries and possibly Pakistan.
The financial angle is being probed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). It has alleged that Chhangur Baba owned properties worth over Rs 100 crore in UP and Maharashtra, mostly on encroached government land. ED has found evidence of money laundering worth Rs 60 crore while probing 22 bank accounts linked to Chhangur Baba and his aides.
