RCB Named in FIR Over Stampede Outside Chinnaswamy Stadium

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) has been named in a First Information Report (FIR) filed in connection with the deadly stampede that occurred outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on June 4. The tragic incident claimed the lives of 11 people during celebrations marking RCB’s first Indian Premier League (IPL) title win.
The FIR, lodged by the Cubbon Park police, also includes event management firm DNA Entertainment Private Limited and the Karnataka State Cricket Association’s administrative committee. The case has been registered under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including those related to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, causing hurt, use of dangerous means, unlawful assembly, and abetment of an offence.
According to authorities, the crowd far exceeded the venue’s capacity. While the stadium can accommodate around 35,000 spectators, an estimated 2 to 3 lakh people gathered for the celebration, leading to chaos and a fatal stampede.
In response, the Karnataka government has announced ₹10 lakh in compensation for each of the victims’ families and committed to covering medical expenses for those injured. Many of the injured are receiving treatment at Bowring Hospital and other medical centers in the city.
In a statement, RCB expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and pledged immediate financial support to the bereaved families. “As a mark of respect and solidarity, RCB has announced financial aid of ₹10 lakh for each of the eleven families of the deceased. Additionally, a relief initiative called ‘RCB Cares’ is being launched to assist injured fans,” the franchise said.
