Rajya Sabha Backs President’s Rule in Manipur

The Rajya Sabha passed a statutory resolution on Friday endorsing President’s Rule in Manipur, following its imposition on February 13 under Article 356 after Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s resignation. The decision, supported across party lines, reflects the central government’s response to ongoing unrest in the northeastern state. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, addressing the house after debate, highlighted a planned meeting between Manipur’s conflicting Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities to seek peace.

Shah’s claim of no major violence in the state over the past four months, despite ethnic clashes since May 2023 that have caused deaths and displacement. The resolution’s approval came after a late-night Lok Sabha session, where it passed by voice vote following a brief 40-minute discussion. This marks Manipur’s 11th stint under President’s Rule, suspending its state assembly amid recurring instability.

The Congress party criticized the Lok Sabha’s 2 a.m. timing as undermining parliamentary dignity, though both houses ultimately unified in support. With governance now under central control, focus shifts to the promised dialogue, a potential step toward resolving Manipur’s deep-seated conflict.
