New Delhi : A credit war broke out between Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi after the latter praised the recruitment of around 30,000 workers at Foxconn’s new women-headed iPhone unit in Bengaluru. Gandhi called the feat a “transformative job creation” in a post on Facebook two days ago, commending Congress-ruled Karnataka for creating a favourable work ecosystem.
The Leader of Opposition also said this is the type of India that must be built. “Jobs with dignity, and opportunities for all. Vaishnaw thanked Gandhi for his “acknowledgment”. “As you have noted, we are becoming a producer economy as we implement our PM’s vision,” he tweeted. Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn’s mass hirings in only eight to nine months reportedly marked one of the fastest factory ramp-ups ever in India.
The Devanahalli facility, primarily run by women and employing mostly first-time workers aged 19–24, reflects Apple’s expedited approach to diversify its supply chain beyond China. Over 80 per cent of the output at the facility, which is spread across 300 acres, is being exported, thereby highlighting India’s growing role in Apple’s global manufacturing network.
Karnataka is setting an example by creating an ecosystem where manufacturing can grow at this scale and speed. This is the India we must build: jobs with dignity, and opportunities for all,” he added. This comes after the Taiwanese electronics major Hon Hai Precision Industry Co (Foxconn) recruited close to 30,000 employees at its new iPhone assembly facility in Devanahalli near Bengaluru within just eight to nine months, marking the fastest factory scale-up seen in India so far.
