Rahul Gandhi Joins High-Level Panel at PMO to Decide Next CBI Chief

Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi arrived at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to take part in a key meeting to select the next Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The decision on the CBI Director’s appointment is made by a high-powered three-member committee headed by the Prime Minister. The panel also includes the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and the Chief Justice of India, or a Supreme Court judge nominated by the CJI.
As outlined in a 2019 Supreme Court ruling, only officers with a minimum of six months of service remaining are eligible for consideration. Additionally, the court mandated that the CBI Director must serve a fixed tenure of two years and can be removed only with the committee’s consent.
This selection process is guided by provisions under the Central Vigilance Commission Act, 2003, which also formalizes the two-year tenure for the CBI’s top post.
