Pune Police Debunk False Rape Allegation, Cite Professor’s Role in Misleading Claim

Pune — Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar announced on Sunday that a rape complaint filed by a 22-year-old tech professional was determined to be false and misleading, allegedly orchestrated with guidance from a professor. The woman had claimed that a delivery agent assaulted her, but investigations revealed inconsistencies, including evidence of consensual interaction and a fabricated threat.
The commissioner, speaking at the inauguration of a new police chowkey under the Sinhagad Road police station, addressed concerns about a narrative suggesting a breakdown in Pune’s law and order, particularly regarding women’s safety. Without directly referencing the specific case, Kumar emphasized that the complaint was used to falsely portray Pune as unsafe. “Our teams busted the narrative within 24 hours, establishing that the complaint was entirely false and misleading,” he told.
Investigations revealed that the woman’s allegations, which included a claim that the delivery agent took a selfie with her phone and left a threatening message, were contradicted by evidence. Police confirmed there was no forced entry, and the interaction was consensual. The woman reportedly wrote the threat message herself.

The complainant’s statements were recorded before a Judicial Magistrate First Class due to her inconsistent accounts, police said. A senior officer noted that her multiple statements were contradictory and misleading, prompting further scrutiny. The Maharashtra government’s prior directives against false narratives, issued in response to incidents like food adulteration used to target communities, were cited by Kumar as a reason to counter such claims swiftly.
The police continue to investigate the motives behind the false complaint, with Kumar stressing that efforts to defame Pune, widely regarded as one of India’s safest cities, will not be tolerated.
