PM Modi Reacts to Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation, Wishes Him Good Health

New Delhi: In a surprising development, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has abruptly stepped down from his position, citing health reasons and bringing his term to a premature end.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded to the news on Monday via a post on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. He acknowledged Dhankhar’s extensive career in public service and extended his best wishes. “Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji has got many opportunities to serve our country in various capacities, including as the Vice President of India. Wishing him good health,” the Prime Minister stated.

Dhankhar, 74, tendered his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu a day earlier. His letter detailed that the decision was based on medical counsel. “To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution,” he wrote.

The resignation brings an early end to Dhankhar’s five-year term, which commenced in August 2022 and was scheduled to conclude in August 2027. In his capacity as Vice President, he also presided over the Rajya Sabha as its Chairman.

The timing of his departure, which coincided with the first day of Parliament’s Monsoon Session, has fueled widespread speculation within political and media circles. However, the resignation letter did not disclose any specific details regarding his medical condition.
