PM Modi to Assess Punjab’s Devastating Floods Amid Ongoing Relief Efforts

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Punjab on September 9, 2025, to evaluate the severe flood crisis that has claimed at least 48 lives, according to a report . The floods, triggered by heavy rainfall in Punjab and neighboring regions, have caused widespread destruction, displacing numerous residents and damaging thousands of hectares of cropland.
The Indian Army, in coordination with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Border Security Force (BSF), Punjab Police, and local authorities, is spearheading relief and rescue operations. Dozens of military columns have been deployed to assist affected communities, while local volunteers, aid organizations, and celebrities have also contributed to the efforts, as noted . Modi’s visit, announced by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state unit chief Sunil Jakhar, will focus on assessing the ground situation. Educational institutions across Punjab, including schools, colleges, and universities, are set to reopen on September 8, 2025, as announced by Education Minister Harjot Bains. However, decisions regarding closures of flood-affected schools will be made by respective deputy commissioners. In government schools, classes will resume on September 9.
The water level in the Pong dam, located on the Beas River, has slightly receded to 1,392.20 feet, though it remains above its upper limit of 1,390 feet, according to officials cited by PTI. Approximately 90,000 cusecs of water are being released into the Shah Nehar barrage to manage the overflow. Relief operations continue as authorities work to mitigate the crisis and support affected communities.
