Modi’s First Manipur Visit Since 2023 Clashes Set for September

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Manipur in the second week of September, marking his first trip to the state since ethnic violence erupted in May 2023, according to government sources. The visit, planned for Imphal and Churachandpur districts, comes over two years after clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities left more than 260 dead and displaced over 60,000 people.

During his visit, Modi is anticipated to meet with individuals displaced by the conflict and announce significant infrastructure projects to aid the region’s recovery. He is also expected to inaugurate several initiatives, signaling the central government’s commitment to rebuilding the state. The trip is likely to coincide with Modi’s scheduled visit to Mizoram and Assam from September 12-14, where he will launch railway and other development projects.

Manipur has faced intense scrutiny since the violence began, with opposition parties and local residents criticizing Modi for not visiting earlier. The state was placed under President’s Rule on February 13, 2025, extended for another six months on August 5 after Home Minister Amit Shah’s resolution was approved by Parliament. Despite the extension, efforts continue to restore an elected government, as the Manipur Assembly remains intact.

Since the imposition of President’s Rule, major violence has largely subsided, though tensions persist. Security forces have cracked down on organized extortion groups and recovered hundreds of weapons looted from police armories in 2023, with seizures reported across both hill and valley districts. The tightened security measures are part of preparations for Modi’s visit to ensure safety and prevent unrest.

The Prime Minister’s trip is seen as a step toward addressing the ongoing challenges in Manipur, with hopes it will foster dialogue and support for those affected by the conflict.
