Oxford Clash: Banerjee Unveils 1990s Injury Poster Amid Fiery Protests

During her United Kingdom visit, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faced fierce protests and disruptions while addressing Oxford University’s Kellogg College. According to India Today, the event turned contentious when demonstrators reportedly led by the Students’ Federation of India (SFI-UK)—challenged her over the state’s development strategy and investment policies.

Banerjee’s remarks on West Bengal’s progress and potential investment opportunities quickly shifted focus when questions about the notorious RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case in Kolkata emerged. A protester pressed her on the government’s handling of this sensitive case, sparking a heated exchange. In response, a visibly frustrated Banerjee admonished, “You should give me a chance to speak. You are not insulting me; you are disrespecting your institution.”

In a dramatic display of resilience, Banerjee produced a poster-sized image from the 1990s that showed her with a bandaged head—a stark reminder of an attempt on her life. When questioned further about the treatment of Hindus in Bengal, she stated, “I am for all, Hindus and Muslims.” This was followed by chants of “Go back” from part of the audience, deepening the discord.

The Q&A session continued with inquiries about the Tata Group’s controversial withdrawal from West Bengal during her tenure. Once again, Banerjee referenced the 1990s image to underline the political challenges she has endured.

After the event, SFI-UK claimed responsibility for the protests. In a statement reported on X, the group criticized Kellogg College for hosting Banerjee, describing her as an “anti-democratic leader” and asserting that the police were unnecessarily involved when they attempted to voice their dissent.
