Over 170 Flights Hit As Rain Pounds Delhi-NCR, Orange Alert For Rain In Delhi-NCR Today

New Delhi : Rain lashed several parts of Delhi and the surrounding National Capital Region (NCR) on Friday morning, causing widespread waterlogging and traffic snarls in several areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for parts of Delhi on Friday, warning of light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Meanwhile, a red alert has been issued for Noida and Ghaziabad, predicting extremely to very heavy rainfall in these regions.

The rest of the capital is expected to experience light rain or drizzle throughout the day, with no specific alerts in place. According to the Lucknow Met Centre, Gautam Buddha Nagar and Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh are currently under a red alert due to expected intense weather conditions. Meanwhile, Gurugram and Faridabad remain unaffected, with no warnings issued for these cities.

Heavy traffic congestion was reported across several key routes in the capital following a spell of rain. Major stretches including the DND Flyway, Mathura Road, Vikas Marg, ISBT, Geeta Colony and Rajaram Kohli Marg experienced slow-moving traffic, according to Delhi Traffic Police. Long vehicle queues stretched from Badarpur to Ashram, leading to significant delays for office commuters and school buses. Officials attributed the disruption to rain-induced waterlogging in certain areas.

According to Flightradar24.com, a live flight tracking website, the average delay of departures at Delhi airport was 28 minutes. The data also revealed that at least 146 departures and 30 arrivals were delayed on August 29 till 11.30 am. “The skies over Delhi are bringing in some light showers today. While there is no major impact on roads yet, travel may be slower in a few areas. If you are on your way to the airport, please plan ahead and check your flight details in advance using our app or website. Our airport teams are here to support you at all times,” the airline said in a tweet.

Adding to the woes of the Delhiites, services on a key stretch of the DMRC’s Yellow Line were disrupted during peak office and school hours. The weather department’s weather forecast predicts isolated heavy rainfall in parts of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Haryana until September 1.
