Operation Akhal : Two Soldiers Killed in Kulgam Encounter, Two Injured; Op Started On August 1

New Delhi : Two soldiers were killed in an encounter with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam as Operation Akhal entered its ninth day on Saturday, officials said. The fallen soldiers have been identified as Lance Naik Pritpal Singh and Sepoy Harminder Singh. “Chinar Corps honours the supreme sacrifice of the Bravehearts, L/Nk Pritpal Singh and Sep Harminder Singh, in the line of duty for the Nation.

Their courage and dedication will forever inspire us. The Indian Army expresses its deepest condolences and stands in solidarity with the bereaved families. Operation continues,” the army tweeted, announcing the deaths. More than five terrorists have also been killed in the operation, which began on August 1 after security forces launched a cordon and search in a forest area at Akhal in the South Kashmir district, following specific intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists there.

Security forces have maintained a tight cordon and continue to engage the militants in the thickly forested terrain. The dense and difficult terrain, which includes thick foliage and caves, has made the operation challenging and protracted. Security forces have deployed drones and helicopters to track down the terrorists in the forested area, with Para commandos assisting in the operation to eliminate the hiding militants.

Residents of Akhal village have begun evacuating to safer locations, with children and women particularly traumatised by the relentless gunfire and blasts. The security forces have intensified anti-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir following the Pahalgam terrorist attacks of April 22, in which Pakistan-based terrorists killed 26 civilians, mostly tourists.

Operation Akhal was launched after security forces killed the Lashkar terrorists behind the Pahalgam massacre near Srinagar’s Dachigam area in Operation Mahadev. The very next day, on July 29, another operation named Shiv Shakti was carried out where two more terrorists were eliminated by the Army.
