Kolkata : A nurse was found dead at a nursing home in West Bengal’s Hooghly district, prompting locals to grow livid and stage protests, demanding swift justice for the victim. The body of the 24-year-old woman was found hanging from the ceiling in a room on the fourth floor of the nursing home in Singur, the police said.
As the matter became known to the public, tensions flared and workers of political parties, too, added to the ongoing protests. BJP workers blocked roads and burnt tyres, leading to a six-hour-long traffic blockage. CPM leader Tirthankar Roy alleged irregularities in the process, pointing at the broken CCTV cameras and damaged doors at the morgue where the body was kept.
We demand a videographed autopsy in the presence of a magistrate to prevent evidence tampering, Roy said. The police team investigating the case spoke to India Today about their findings, which included an examination of the victim’s mobile phone. The examination of the messages on WhatsApp revealed that the victim had a heated altercation with her boyfriend, who refused to marry her due to their age difference.
In response to the revelation, the boyfriend was taken into custody and interrogated. During the interrogation, he confirmed that the nurse was distraught after the rejection. He also admitted being younger than the victim and it being the primary reason for him not marrying her. The postmortem of the body is expected on August 15, a Friday, at the Kolkata Medical College. The process will be recorded on video as demanded. State minister Becharam Manna, who is the local Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA, said action will be taken if the police investigation finds any foul play in her death.
