Neelamben Parikh, Great-Granddaughter of Gandhi and Social Welfare Advocate, Passes Away at 93

Neelamben Parikh, a direct descendant of Mahatma Gandhi, died on Tuesday in Navsari, India, at the age of 93. She was the great-granddaughter of the iconic leader, being the granddaughter of Harilal Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi’s eldest son, and the daughter of Harilal’s eldest child, Ramiben.

A steadfast follower of Gandhian values, Neelamben devoted her life to advancing social welfare, with a special emphasis on uplifting women and championing human rights. She established Dakshinapatha, an organization committed to offering tribal women education and vocational training to foster their economic independence. Her influence in the realm of social good endured long after her retirement, which occurred three decades ago.

Despite her fragile physical demeanor, Neelamben was celebrated for her remarkable resilience and deep-rooted commitment to social causes. She embodied Gandhi’s principles of simplicity and self-reliance through her dedication to Khadi and her firm belief in truth, known locally as ‘Vyara.’

Neelamben lived in Navsari alongside her son, Dr. Sameer Parikh, a respected ophthalmologist. Her funeral procession was set to commence from her home at 8:00 AM, followed by cremation at the Veerwal Crematorium, as reported.

Her passing marks the end of a life dedicated to perpetuating the ideals of her great-grandfather while leaving a lasting imprint on her community through her tireless social efforts.
