National Center for Seismology Refutes Claims of Earthquake Prediction for Delhi and Nepal

The National Center for Seismology (NCS) has refuted claims made by an individual regarding an impending earthquake in Delhi and Nepal. In a statement released on March 31, NCS clarified that the forecast by Vikas Kumar was not backed by any scientific evidence and had no approval from the agency.
NCS Denounces Unverified Predictions
Dr. O.P. Mishra, Director of NCS, emphasized that Kumar had previously made similar predictions despite repeated warnings against spreading misinformation that could cause public panic. The agency reiterated that, with the current state of scientific knowledge and technology, earthquakes cannot be predicted in terms of timing, location, or magnitude.
In a post on X, NCS further clarified that earthquake generation is a complex process that remains poorly understood, making accurate forecasting impossible. The agency also pointed out that Kumar’s reference to “20 degrees and 45 degrees” in his notice lacked clarity, as it did not specify whether these were latitude or longitude values.
Recent Earthquake in Myanmar
Meanwhile, on March 28, NCS reported that a powerful M7.5 earthquake struck central Myanmar, followed by an M7.0 aftershock within 15 minutes. Nearly 25 lower-magnitude tremors were also recorded. The epicenter was located 16 kilometers from Sagaing and 250 kilometers from Naypyidaw, Myanmar’s capital.
In response, India has launched Operation Brahma, sending relief materials to aid the earthquake-affected regions in Myanmar.
