Murshidabad Violence: Bangladeshi Miscreants Suspected; Govt Sources

New Delhi: According to government sources, an initial investigation into the recent violence in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district has pointed to the possible involvement of Bangladeshi miscreants. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has been informed of these findings, which also indicate that local political figures may have initially supported these groups but later lost control.

The MHA is actively monitoring the situation in Murshidabad and other sensitive districts in the state. Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan has communicated with the West Bengal Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, assuring them of the Centre’s full support. He also instructed the state administration to take prompt measures to restore peace and maintain vigilance in vulnerable areas.

To contain the unrest, the MHA has deployed nine companies of the Border Security Force (BSF)—approximately 900 personnel—in the district. Around 300 BSF officers were already stationed nearby, while the rest were dispatched following a request from the state government.

West Bengal’s DGP has reported that while the situation remains tense, it is currently under control and continues to be closely observed. Over 150 arrests have been made so far, with the assistance of the BSF.

The violence erupted last week during protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act in the Muslim-majority region of Murshidabad. The demonstrations escalated into widespread unrest across several districts, including Malda, South 24 Parganas, and Hooghly. Incidents of arson, stone-pelting, and road blockades were reported.

Authorities have enforced prohibitory measures and suspended internet services in the worst-affected areas. Although no new incidents have been reported, tensions remain high.

Expressing concern, the MHA highlighted unrest in three border areas of Murshidabad and cited intelligence reports about cross-border involvement. Allegedly, the miscreants were initially backed by local leaders affiliated with the Trinamool Congress (TMC), though the situation later spiraled beyond their control.

The violence has reportedly forced several Hindu families to flee to Malda, sparking fears of further infiltration and communal tension. The Centre has asked the West Bengal government to clarify the lack of immediate action, the failure to protect public property, and the delay in responding to attacks on railway infrastructure.Meta: MHA suspects Bangladeshi miscreants behind Murshidabad unrest, with TMC links and over 150 arrests made amid rising tensions.
