PM Modi Launches Mission Sudarshan Chakra to Bolster India’s Security

New Delhi: During his Independence Day address from the Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced a bold national security initiative named Mission Sudarshan Chakra, designed to safeguard India’s critical infrastructure over the next decade. Speaking to the nation on August 15, 2025, Modi emphasized the importance of ensuring every citizen feels secure, stating, “Every citizen must feel protected.” The initiative, rooted in indigenous technology, will focus on research-driven solutions to enhance India’s defense capabilities.

Mission Sudarshan Chakra aims to create a comprehensive security framework, incorporating advanced surveillance, cybersecurity measures, and fortified physical infrastructure to address the country’s evolving threat landscape. Modi highlighted the initiative’s reliance on homegrown innovation, aligning it with the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) vision, particularly in defense and critical infrastructure development.

Drawing on cultural symbolism, Modi referenced a pivotal moment from the Mahabharata, where Lord Krishna shielded the sun to aid Arjuna’s victory. “We take inspiration from Lord Krishna, who altered the course of battle. Similarly, we must protect our vital institutions from modern threats,” he said, blending mythology with a forward-looking strategic vision.

While specific details of the mission remain undisclosed, sources indicate it will involve collaboration among India’s leading research organizations, defense agencies, and private sector innovators. The announcement comes amid growing global concerns over cyber warfare, hybrid threats, and attacks on strategic assets, underscoring the need for proactive security measures. Modi also reflected on past vulnerabilities, such as the 2008 Mumbai attacks, stressing the importance of anticipatory and integrated security planning. “We cannot afford to be reactive. We must anticipate and prepare,” he said.

As India marks its 79th year of independence, Mission Sudarshan Chakra represents a strategic commitment to safeguarding the nation’s future through innovation and resilience. The initiative underscores India’s push for self-reliance in security technology, aiming to strengthen national sovereignty.
