Medical Student Gang-Raped Near Private College In Bengal

Kolkata : A second-year student of a private medical college was allegedly dragged and raped inside hospital premises in West Bengal. The survivor, who hails from Jaleswar in Odisha, is pursuing her MBBS degree at the private medical college located near Shobhapur in Durgapur, the biggest industrial hub of West Bengal located 170 km from the capital Kolkata.

A man allegedly dragged her to a secluded area behind the hospital and raped her. On receiving information about the incident, police rushed to the spot and started an investigation. The survivor was admitted to a hospital for medical examination. The medical student’s father told reporters that he was informed of the incident by his daughter’s friend. When I reached there, my daughter was in a serious condition, and there was no response from the hospital administration, he alleged.

When she reached the campus gate, around four to five persons were there. One of them raped her, took her mobile phone, and demanded Rs 3,000 to return it. The boy abandoned her and fled. They raped her,” the survivor’s father said. This incident happened between 8 and 9 pm. The hostel was far away, and she had come here to eat. The security arrangements are not sufficient. Such a serious incident occurred, but no action has been taken.

However, police are yet to issue an official statement in the case. Sources said the investigators are examining multiple angles to chart the sequence of events. After the incident came to light, the West Bengal Doctors’ Front (WBDF) strongly condemned the gangrape of the medical student and called it another “chilling reminder” that women are not safe even on campuses (in the state).

Demanding justice for the girl, the WBDF said the Chief Justice of India should take cognisance of the matter and order judicial inquiry. West Bengal’s chief opposition BJP also launched a scathing attack on the Mamata Banerjee-led government, saying there was a repeated failure of law and order in the state. This repeated failure of law and order exposes a disturbing pattern under Mamata Banerjee’s administration.
