Maharashtra Sees Surge in COVID-19 Cases with 76 New Infections, Mumbai Reports 27

Mumbai: Maharashtra recorded 76 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, bringing the state’s active caseload to 425, according to a health department bulletin. Mumbai accounted for 27 of these cases, while Pune reported 21, Thane 12, Kalyan 8, Navi Mumbai 4, Raigad 2, and both Kolhapur and Ahilyanagar each reported 1 case. The bulletin noted that 132 patients recovered on the same day, and no new deaths were reported.

Since January 2025, Maharashtra has documented 597 COVID-19 cases, with Mumbai contributing 379 of them. The state has also recorded seven deaths linked to the virus during this period, primarily among patients with underlying health conditions, as per health officials.

The rise in cases coincides with the detection of two new Omicron sub-variants, NB.1.8.1 and LF.7, which are under observation by global health authorities. Despite the uptick, the Union Health Ministry has emphasized that most cases remain mild, with patients recovering at home. The ministry has urged the public to stay vigilant but not panic, noting that India’s monitoring systems, including the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), are actively tracking respiratory infections.

Health officials have advised vulnerable groups, such as pregnant women, senior citizens, and those with comorbidities, to wear masks in crowded places and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms appear. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has assured residents that hospitals are prepared to handle cases and the situation is under close monitoring.
