The price of LPG cylinders has been increased by Rs 50 for both subsidised and non-subsidised consumers, Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced on Monday. The hike applies to both Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries.
“For PMUY beneficiaries, the price will rise from Rs 500 to Rs 550 per cylinder. For other consumers, it will increase from Rs 803 to Rs 853,” Puri said. He added that the revision is subject to periodic review, typically every 2–3 weeks. Puri also clarified that the recent excise duty hike on petrol and diesel is not aimed at burdening consumers.
The development comes just days after oil marketing companies (OMCs) reduced the price of 19-kg commercial LPG cylinders by Rs 41. Following the revision, the revised retail price of commercial LPG in Delhi is Rs 1,762. This comes as a relief, as OMCs had increased commercial LPG cylinder prices by Rs 6 across major cities on March 1.
Last week, the prices of commercial LPG gas cylinders were reduced by Rs 41. The price revision impacted restaurants, hotels and other commercial establishments that use these cylinders for daily operations. Earlier today, the government has also raised its excise duty on petrol and diesel, however, the hike would not be passed on to consumers and would be borne by oil marketing companies.
The excise duty on petrol was hiked to Rs 13 per litre and that on diesel to Rs 10 a litre, an official order showed. The increase in duties will “come into force on the 8th day of April 2025,” it said. While any change in taxes is normally passed on to consumers, there will be no change in the retail selling price of petrol and diesel as the excise hike will be set off against the reduction in retail prices that was warranted from the fall in international oil prices.
