Elusive Long-Snouted Vine Snake Resurfaces in Dudhwa Tiger Reserve

A seldom-seen long-snouted vine snake (Ahaetulla longirostris) has been spotted in Uttar Pradesh’s Dudhwa Tiger Reserve, marking its debut sighting in the state and only the second documented occurrence across India, according to forest officials. The striking green reptile was uncovered on March 28 in the Palia Kheri division during a rhino release operation, as officials cleared a termite mound to ensure safety, they reported.

The snake was identified by field biologist Vipin Kapoor Sainy and a team of researchers. Until this find, the species had only been recorded once before in India, spanning Bihar and Odisha in the previous year, though it is more frequently observed in Southeast Asia, officials noted. Sainy emphasized that this rediscovery opens doors for deeper studies of the species in the years ahead.

After careful handling, the snake was relocated to a nearby termite mound, with authorities opting to preserve the original mound undisturbed. Dr. H. Raja Mohan, Field Director of Dudhwa Tiger Reserve, praised the find as evidence of the reserve’s rich biodiversity. “Dudhwa keeps revealing its secrets. The reappearance of Ahaetulla longirostris underscores the value of ongoing research and protecting natural habitats,” he stated.

Dr. Rengaraju T., Conservator of Forests and Deputy Director of the reserve, described the event as a significant milestone for wildlife conservation in India. “Spotting Ahaetulla longirostris in the Kakraha Rhino Reintroduction Area-1, South Sonaripur, highlights how even minor ecological features like termite mounds play a vital role in sheltering rare species,” he said.
