New Delhi : The Supreme Court on Monday witnessed a dramatic scene when a lawyer attempted to throw a shoe at Chief Justice of India BR Gavai during a hearing. Today’s incident comes just weeks after the Chief Justice was widely criticised over his controversial “go and ask the deity itself” remarks while hearing a plea linked to the restoration of a damaged Vishnu idol in Madhya Pradesh.
The accused was immediately detained, while Chief Justice Gavai remained composed and continued the proceedings without interruption. Supreme Court lawyer Rohit Pandey identified the accused as a member of the Bar Association since 2011. The act appears to have been in response to the Chief Justice’s deity remarks. I strongly condemn this incident and urge that strict action be taken against the accused, he said.
Chief Justice Gavai told the petitioner, This is purely a publicity interest litigation. Go and ask the deity itself to do something now. You say you are a staunch devotee of Lord Vishnu. So go and pray now. However, in the wake of widespread criticism on social media, as well as lawyers seeking a clarification over the controversial comments, the Chief Justice said that his remarks were “misrepresented” and stressed that he “respects all religions.”
While dismissing a plea seeking restoration of the 7-foot Vishnu idol at the Javari temple in Madhya Pradesh, Chief Justice Gavai told the petitioner, This is purely a publicity interest litigation. Go and ask the deity itself to do something now. You say you are a staunch devotee of Lord Vishnu. So go and pray now.
