From Advocate to Accused: Kolkata Lawyer’s Hypocritical Past Exposed

Kolkata: Monojit Mishra, a 31-year-old lawyer and former student leader at South Calcutta Law College, now faces serious allegations of rape, a stark contradiction to his public stance against sexual violence just a year ago. On August 16, 2024, following the rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Mishra posted a video on Facebook of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee leading a protest march. In the caption, he passionately demanded, “We demand noose for the rapist, we demand justice, not drama, we demand justice without delay, we demand noose for the guilty,” referring to Banerjee as “Agnikanya” (fiery daughter). His post has since drawn sharp criticism, with online users condemning his apparent hypocrisy.

Less than a year later, Mishra is the prime accused in a disturbing rape case at South Calcutta Law College, where he allegedly assaulted a 24-year-old first-year student on June 25, 2025. Three others, identified as Pramit Mukhopadhyay, Jaib Ahmed, and a college security guard, have also been arrested in connection with the incident. All four have been expelled from the institution and are currently in police custody, awaiting a court appearance on July 1, 2025.

Mishra’s history reveals a pattern of troubling behavior. Multiple police complaints against him include allegations of sexual assault, theft, vandalism, and assault. In 2019, he was accused of tearing a woman’s clothes on the college premises and stealing items, including a music system, perfume, and spectacles, from a friend’s home. In 2022, a molestation case was filed against him in Swinhoe Lane, and in 2017, he faced charges for assaulting an individual. Additionally, in May 2024, Mishra was implicated in attacking a college guard and damaging campus property. He was out on bail for these prior cases at the time of his recent arrest.

The Kolkata Police have formed a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case, and investigators are searching for videos allegedly recorded by the accused on their mobile phones. The case has sparked significant public outrage, with many drawing parallels to the 2024 RG Kar case, amplifying calls for swift justice against Mishra and his co-accused.
