Kerala Braces for Severe Weather as IMD Issues Red Alert for Five Districts

Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for five districts in Kerala, signaling the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall in the coming days. The alert, part of a broader warning system including orange and yellow alerts for other regions, comes as the state experiences relentless monsoon-driven downpours. The IMD has cautioned residents, particularly those in vulnerable areas, to stay vigilant and monitor weather updates closely.
According to the IMD, the red alert indicates the potential for rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm within 24 hours, which could lead to significant disruptions. An orange alert, forecasting very heavy rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm in a day, has been issued for several other districts. Meanwhile, a yellow alert, indicating heavy rainfall ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm, applies to additional areas across the state. These alerts underscore the intensity of the current monsoon activity, which shows no signs of easing.
The State Disaster Management Authority has urged residents in low-lying and landslide-prone areas to exercise caution. Authorities have also highlighted the risk of flash floods and traffic disruptions due to the heavy rainfall. The IMD’s forecast aligns with the expected arrival of the southwest monsoon, which is likely to intensify conditions in Kerala over the next few days.
