New Delhi: Justice Surya Kant was officially sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India on Monday, November 24, 2025. The oath of office was administered by President Droupadi Murmu during a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Justice Kant delivered his oath in Hindi, affirming his commitment to uphold the Constitution and fulfill his judicial duties with integrity.
Justice Kant’s term as Chief Justice is set to last just over a year, with his retirement scheduled for February 9, 2027. He has served as a Supreme Court judge since May 24, 2019.
Born in Hisar, Haryana, on February 10, 1962, Justice Kant graduated from his hometown institutions before receiving a law degree from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak, in 1984. He began his legal career at the Hisar district court before moving to practice at the Punjab and Haryana High Court in Chandigarh in 1985.
Throughout his tenure at the Supreme Court, Justice Kant has contributed to several significant rulings. He was part of the bench that decided on the abrogation of Article 370, ending the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. Additionally, he served on the bench that struck down the electoral bonds scheme as unconstitutional and was involved in hearings related to the Pegasus spyware case and the suspension of the sedition law.
Justice Kant became the youngest Advocate General of Haryana on July 7, 2000, and achieved the status of senior advocate in March 2001. He was appointed as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on January 9, 2004, and later elevated to Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in October 2018.
