Judge Walks Out Of Courtroom Due To Pushing; Lawyers Push, Shove Each Other Before I-PAC Hearing

Kolkata : The hearing in the I-PAC case at the Calcutta High Court was derailed even before it began after the judge walked out of the courtroom as lawyers pushed and shoved each other. Despite repeated warnings from Justice Suvra Ghosh, order was not restored in the courtroom. Issuing a stern warning, she asked lawyers not associated with the case to leave within five minutes, failing which she said she would step out.

Following this, hearings in both cases filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Trinamool Congress were deferred to January 14. In its petition before the Calcutta High Court, the ED sought a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for allegedly intervening in the central agency’s probe into the coal scam during searches conducted at the I-PAC office and the residence of I-PAC chief Pratik Jain on Thursday.

The ruling party in Bengal further filed two complaints against the ED and subsequently, the Kolkata and Bidhannagar Police filed FIRs and initiated a probe. The confrontation between the ED and the Mamata Banerjee government has heated up with the central agency accusing the Chief Minister of removing “key documents” and electronic devices from the probe sites.

Frustrated by the packed courtroom, Justice Ghosh left the courtroom and adjourned the case till January 14. Both the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Trinamool Congress have approached the court after the central agency raided the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC) office on Thursday. The ED had sought a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for allegedly interfering in its investigation into a coal scam during raids at I-PAC’s office and Pratik Jain’s residence.
