JNU Suspends MoU with Turkish University Over National Security Fears

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has suspended its academic collaboration with Inonu University in Turkey, citing concerns related to national security. The decision came after a reassessment of their memorandum of understanding (MoU), amid reports implicating Turkey in activities affecting India’s strategic interests.

Announcing the move via its official X account, JNU stated: “Due to national security considerations, the MoU between JNU and Inn University, Trkiye, stands suspended until further notice. JNU stands with the nation.”

The academic agreement, signed on February 3, 2025, was initially intended to remain active until February 2, 2028, promoting joint research and student exchange initiatives between the two institutions.

However, heightened tensions following allegations from defence sources—suggesting that Turkey had supplied drones and personnel to Pakistan have prompted a broader reassessment of foreign academic ties. These claims have added to growing unease in India about Ankara’s alignment with Islamabad during recent regional conflicts.

The suspension aligns with the larger ‘Boycott Turkey’ movement, which has gained traction due to Turkey’s perceived support for Pakistan. The move reflects India’s increased vigilance in protecting national interests, especially in international academic engagements.

JNU has informed affected students and faculty involved in the programme, assuring them that alternative academic arrangements will be made if needed.
