In Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, retired railway employee Ram Singh Parihar allegedly murdered his 35-year-old live-in partner Preeti around January 8 after she repeatedly demanded money from him, police told.
Already having received several lakhs, Preeti’s demands reportedly escalated, prompting the crime. Parihar, who was secretly married to two women—one in Sipri Bazaar and another in City Kotwali—strangled her, wrapped the body in tarpaulin, placed it in a metal trunk, and set it on fire to destroy evidence.
After burning the remains, he dumped most of the ashes in a nearby river, leaving charred bones and residue in the trunk. He then arranged to move the incriminating trunk to his second wife Geeta’s house.
On Saturday night, he hired a loader vehicle for ₹400, involving his son Nitin and others. The driver, Jaysingh Pal, grew suspicious of the men’s behaviour and the trunk’s heavy weight and odour. After delivery, he alerted police.

Officers forced open the blue trunk and found human skeletal remains and burnt material. Jhansi SP (City) Preeti Singh confirmed that the remains have been sent for forensic examination.
Geeta told police Parihar claimed he was being harassed for money. A neighbour recalled Parihar collecting firewood for days and a persistent strange smell, initially blamed on winter heating.
The case was registered after a complaint by Preeti’s former husband. Nitin and another person involved in transporting the trunk have been detained; the main accused, Ram Singh Parihar, is still absconding.
Investigations continue with forensic analysis underway.
