Devastating Floods in Ramban: Hundreds of Homes Damaged, Nearly 1,000 Evacuated

JAMMU, Sep 5 – Torrential rains, flash floods, and landslides have wreaked havoc in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district, damaging 283 homes and forcing the evacuation of 950 residents, officials reported Thursday. The relentless downpours, which triggered a cloudburst in Drubla village, Rajgarh tehsil, on August 29, caused widespread destruction, including to critical infrastructure.
According to Ramban Deputy Commissioner Alyas Khan, the cloudburst led to significant landslides and flooding, severely impacting roads and utilities. The district saw 84 roads, 98 water supply schemes, and 71 power feeders damaged due to the continuous rainfall. Union Minister Jitendra Singh released a detailed report on the destruction caused by the disaster on Thursday.
The human toll has been significant. Four people lost their lives in the Drubla cloudburst, one woman remains missing, and another individual was injured, Khan confirmed. The affected homes sustained varying degrees of damage, ranging from partial to complete destruction. In response, authorities swiftly evacuated approximately 950 residents to safer locations to protect them from further harm.
The disaster has disrupted daily life and connectivity in the region, with damaged infrastructure hampering access to essential services. Rescue and relief operations are ongoing, with officials working to restore roads, water, and power systems. The scale of the destruction underscores the severity of the weather event, which has left communities grappling with significant losses.
